22-Feb-12The events centre project will move forward - at a cost. City council voted last night to move into Phase two of the three phase project. It will see a detailed wish list of what council wants in the facility outlined. Private companies can then create plans and submit bids. The phase will cost the city 1.3 million dollars most of which is covered through grants and the events centre reserve. It's the last step before a yes or no vote on the events centre constructionThe municipal budget proposed two weeks ago will go ahead as is. It comes after debate last night regarding a missing line in the budget. Despite a fourth fire station being deemed necessary in 2010, there is no money for it in the next three year plan. Alderman Robert Dumanowski fought hard for the project last night saying expansions to the family leisure centre and an events centre seem to be taking priority. By a vote of 5-3 it was decided the fire station would not be added to the budget. Alderman Hamill and Thompson supported Dumanowski in the effort City police are crediting the work of a patrol officer with preventing something more serious - when he checked a suspicious vehicle in a remote part of a city park last Friday night. Environment Minister Diana McQueen says the government will introduce legislation this week to create the advocate job. Witnesses went to Twitter to say they saw a blue and pink flash Tuesday evening between Lloydminster and Saskatoon that lasted just a few seconds. One person who was driving near Martensville, just north of Saskatoon, describes seeing a ball of fire suddenly light up the sky. Allan Hildebrand, with the University of Calgary's department of geosciences, suggests that whatever caused the flash probably wasn't man-made space junk. He says if anything fell to the ground, it probably landed in Saskatchewan More bodies have been found aboard the capsized cruise ship on the Italian coast.
