Gas Lamp Waste

April 17, 2009

100 thousand dollars can go a long way in the city budget, but where do you think it should be spent?  Medicine Hat's downtown gas lamps have been guzzling those dollars in recent years, causing some to question if the historic landmarks are really worth it. As Jeremy Hunka reports change is on the way, and could even bring solar power to the downtown core.

Health Delisting

April 16, 2009

Some bad news for Albertans looking for help to ease their ailing joints. Albertans will now have to cover 100 percent of any type of chiropractic care themselves.  As for those who don't regularly see a chiropractor --- they're not necessarily out of the woods, either.  Alberta Health minister Ron Liepert is looking for more ways to slash costs in his department --- and that could mean further healthcare cuts are on the way.  Scott Cunningham has local reaction.

Life Line Haiti Part Five

April 17, 2009

With an uncertain economy, the future of many non-government organizations is also uncertain. But Lifeline Haiti's president Bob Davisson is confident he'll continue to be able to raise the funds needed to build 17 more schools in the country. The challenge is making collaboration between the organization's founder and operations director even more critical, especially now when the Haitian government is beginning to take notice. Here is part five of our special series from Haiti.

Life Line Haiti Part Four

April 16, 2009

15 percent of all Haitian children are orphaned or abandoned and at least 7 percent are enslaved. Even more disturbing; 10 percent of the child population will die before they turn four. The Haitian Children's Home is an organization that takes in orphaned kids and works closely with Lifeline Haiti. Each child has their own unique story, some more shocking than others,  each one as heartbreaking as the next. Rylee Carlson now with the story of one child who was sold by her mother to be a human sacrifice.

Life Line Haiti Part Three

April 15, 2009

A lack of education isn't the only obstacle facing the Caribbean nation of Haiti. Poverty is sometimes insurmountable, there is no way to get a loan for a small business, and the nation is constantly hammered by hurricanes taking homes and possessions with them when they leave. Part three of our series details how Lifeline Haiti is working to help as many Haitians as they can, not by giving them a hand-out, but by giving them a hand up.

Life Line Haiti Part Two

April 14, 2009

The majority of Haiti's terrain consists of mountains.  But the topography doesn't change the thousands of children living in rural areas looking for an education. Lifeline Haiti chooses the location of a school by starting in an urban centre and moving out towards the need. The key is making sure children in rural schools have the same access to a quality education as children in the city. Here is part 2 of our special series from Haiti

Life Line Hait Part One

April 13, 2009

It's an age-old question - how much of a difference can one person make? That was the exact question on the mind of a local man when he took on the task of educating children in the poor Caribbean nation of Haiti. Bob Davisson began the not for profit organization LifeLine Haiti in January of 2006 with one school and 81 students. Today it's grown to 23 schools and over 3000 children. But while the project has made significant strides, it's now facing the difficult task of battling not only the immense need in Haiti, but a struggling economy here in Canada. Rylee Carlson had the opportunity to follow Davisson to Haiti and capture his work on video.
