Fire Follow

New information about yesterday's Queen street fire was released today. Police say arson by negligence was the cause, with an 18 year old man now facing charges.  But the fire means more than just major damage to one home. The blaze jumped onto another building and another house was devastated. As Jeremy Hunka reports, the senior couple there, has no house insurance.

Motorists are already seeing delays driving on south Boundary road, First Street, and on South Ridge Drive.  But more construction zones are coming as the the summer road work season is just getting started. And as Kyle Bakx tells us - repairs in the tens of millions of dollars are slated to be completed this year. 

Military Camp

Land usually reserved for midway rides and cowboys  is instead playing host to a very different group of people these days. Hundreds of Canadian forces making up the provincial reconstruction team have made camp at the Stampede Grounds. Reporter Scott Cunningham was given a rare look inside the base of operations for the two week long urban training mission, and files this report from the camp --- code named Saamis Tiger.

He expressed his "sorrow and anguish" to Canadian Aboriginals yesterday; Pope Benedict acknowledging what the Vatican calls "deplorable" conduct at church run residential schools.  As Jeremy Hunka reports, local educators welcome the Pope's words, but say the residential schools dark legacy lives on.

City aldermen will gather at the Stampede Grounds Thursday evening.  Behind closed doors they'll determine what goals they wish to achieve for the second half of their time in office.   And as reporter Kyle Bakx discovered, it's also an opportunity to maybe mend a few fences. 

Hog Hysteria

While the world health organization raises its pandemic alert level to number five today, a few eyebrows are also being raised by the swine flu situation in Medicine Hat. Of thirteen confirmed cases in Canada only two have been found here in Alberta. The province's medical officer of health is asking citizens to stay calm --- reminding Albertans that both cases are considered to be mild. Scott Cunningham hit the streets here in our city today --- and discovered that Hatters are taking the health officials advice to heart.

Swine Schools

Local school boards are certainly taking the threat of swine flu seriously. Information on the disease and prevention was sent home with Catholic School children Wednesday.  But, as Jeremy Hunka reports, that is just the beginning.
