Richardson Wrap

March 20, 2009

For some it means relief. For others, painful memories. But the court cases surrounding the triple-homicide in our city, three years ago, are now over.  The police investigation was difficult on many officers, especially those new to the force.  Psychologists, specialists, and councillors were called in to help them cope with the murder investigation.  As Reporter Kyle Bakx explains, the final sentencing has brought closure to many in the community, but has left a permanent footprint.

Lancaster Sentenced

March 19, 2009

The last person with outstanding charges in relation to the Richardson homicides was back in court Thursday morning.  It's alleged that Kacy Lancaster destroyed evidence and provided false alibis for her two co-accused.  Those two individuals have both since been found guilty in their connection with the murders. Lancaster's case has spanned almost three years with little progress.  But today, that all changed.  And as reporter Kyle Bakx tells us, the case came to a close with a sentence.

March 18, 2009

In the fall of last year, the organization representing downtown business owners purchased the Monarch theatre -- with grand plans to re-open the historic building.  But those plans stalled and potential opening dates, were postponed indefinitely.  As Reporter Kyle Bakx discovered, the aging building is largely to blame for the theatre delays.

Brooks Drugs

March 18, 2009

In a community consultation one year ago, residents of Brooks told their local RCMP detachment drugs were their main concern.  That led to the creation of a 2-man crime reduction unit, focusing much of it's energy on quelling the flow of drugs through Brooks.  As Jeremy Hunka reports, the unit is finding some early success, which is also helping efforts of police here in Medicine Hat.

City Budget

March 17, 2009

Chat News revealed last week that city aldermen over-spent on their expense accounts by a total of 45-thousand dollars in 2008.  However, after Monday night's city council meeting aldermen will now have more money to spend. Council approved the budget for the next three years.  It includes an increase in overall spending, including more money for personal expense accounts.  And as reporter Kyle Bakx tells us -- the extra money for alderman comes at the same time Medicine Hat residents are looking at major property tax increases.
