Six months ago some businesses in Medicine Hat -- were pleading to the city for relief from steep natural gas prices; even threatening that the lofty expenses would force them to close their doors.  But since then, natural gas prices have nose-dived, losing the majority of their value.  And as reporter Kyle Bakx tells us -- that has helped some local facilities keep their doors open and keep employees on the job.

Project Salvo included law enforcement agencies across the country. So far in 2009 six Medicine Hat police officers have been assaulted in the line of duty, while fifteen have encountered individuals who have resisted arrest. This week police officers in our city are sharpening the skills they call on in dangerous situations. Reporter Scott Cunningham joined a group of officers as they went for their bi-annual certification, and was literally shocked by the intensity of the training.

It's been talked about for some time -- whether Medicine Hat needs a detox centre in our community. A committee at city hall wants to explore the issue further. Many groups in Medicine Hat already support the project -- city officials included. But many questions remain including who would run the facility and how great is the need for the service.

Homeless Money

One million dollars towards ending homelessness in Medicine Hat. That is what officials with the city's "Homeless and Community Housing department" say would be needed for the next two years to keep care at the current level and create programs to end the problem. This month the Alberta government endorsed a ten year plan to end homelessness across our province, and say they will offer support to specific municipalities to help eradicate homelessness before 2019. Reporter Scott Cunningham has more on an issue affecting more locals than you might think.
