Event Centre Update

It appears Medicine Hat's proposed new Event Centre may finally be seeing some movement. New word from the event centre steering committee today, estimating construction costs have dropped by 15 million dollars. They also outlined a new timetable--saying council will finally vote on the new arena's plans, this fall. Jeremy Hunka reports.
Street Crime Unit
It's often said, "Don't sweat the small stuff." But local police are trying to do the exact opposite -- and put more of a focus on stopping petty crimes like vandalism and vehicle break-ins. The service already has a traffic unit to control roadways and a major crimes unit to investigate serious offences. But as Kyle Bakx reports, there could now be a priority crimes unit, to monitor all the small stuff.

From developers to trade workers, its been a summer of struggles. The construction industry has experienced hardship, with a slow economy and a market place littered with new homes awaiting buyers. While some projects continue to be stalled, others are now seeing movement and are expected to thrive in the coming months. Reporter Kyle Bakx has the story.

In a school system fighting for new facilities -- officials are calling a jump in enrollment a move in the right direction. While both the Catholic and Public systems say schools in certain areas of the city are bursting at the seams -- the influx of new pupil's could grease the wheels of change with the provincial government. Downtown Property for Sale
City aldermen aren't giving up their fight to try and develop a piece of downtown land on First street. It was supposed to be sold as part of a controversial deal for a dollar. But the developer backed out because of the economy. Aldermen are now looking for new interest, and say they're seeing it. Reporter Kyle Bakx has details.
