Smith Visits Medicine Hat

After visiting Brooks and Strathmore yesterday -- the leader of the Wildrose Alliance was in Medicine Hat today. Danielle Smith last came to the Gas City in September of last year -- for a leadership debate. She since taken control of the party and has three MLA's in the legislature. As Kyle Bakx reports, it was largely a learning trip for Smith in Medicine Hat.
Earth Hour
If you're driving around the city tomorrow evening, don't be surprised if everything seems a little darker than usual. The City of Medicine Hat has signed up to participate in Earth Hour. As Jeremy Hunka reports, Hatters are not only encouraged to take part -- but also to be more conscious of energy consumption year round.
Helmet Mom

A local mother is going through quite the ordeal since giving birth to twins. One of her daughters requires the use of a corrective helmet because she has a misshapen head. Without the device, doctors say the child could develop an intellectual disability. But Alberta Health won't pick up the price tag. Reporter Kyle Bakx has the story.

Marketing students at Medicine Hat College put their skills to the test today - encouraging their target market to "Re-Think the Badge." It's part of a project to increase awareness about careers within Alberta's 12 police agencies. Ina Sidhu has more.
Fraser Report on Schools
An independent research group has released its annual rankings of elementary schools in Alberta. And Medicine Hat institutions did not fare well. In fact, the majority were given a below average grade. But as Kyle Bakx reports, local officials are dismissing the numbers.
Internet Use Up

Move over couch potato's. A new study shows Canadians are officially more reliant on their computers for entertainment, than their televisions. A Ipsos Reid study out of Calgary finds we are now spending more time logged on than tuned in. Scott Cunningham takes a closer look at what Hatters use to escape from reality, and if the internet is a more healthy way to relax.
Natural Gas Prices
Little change is expected for gas prices in the Gas City. As the Conference Board of Canada has forecasted a 36 per cent jump in natural gas prices this year from recession lows, local officials are taking a step back from those ambitious predictions. Scott Cunningham has more.
Potholes
A slightly earlier than usual spring thaw -- has Hatters seeing more and more craters popping up on the roads. While potholes aren't a huge problem yet, as Ina Sidhu reports, the season has arrived about 10 days sooner than last year.
Kindergarten Update

The public school board became a leader in the province 5 years ago when it introduced full-day, everyday kindergarten, across the division. But it may return to part-time kindergarten in a cost-cutting move. Both the Catholic and public school boards have postponed making a decision until next month. And as Kyle Bakx reports, that's leaving parents in limbo.
Shredding Event
Dozens of Hatters started their spring cleaning this weekend -- getting rid of some paperwork they no longer need. As Ina Sidhu reports, a public document shredding day was held Saturday -- to help protect against one of the fastest growing fraud-related crimes in the country.
